Personality: Aragorn never had an easy life. Having been given a false name to guard to his identity as heir to Isildur so that he would not suffer the same fate of his father, he had a relatively happy childhood among the elves of Rivendell. This afforded him great wisdom and access to skills that others of his like did not. Because of his gentle nature, h he was unspoiled by the attention given to him nor was he ever made to think himself better than any other person. In short, for his early years, the boy was simply a gentle, happy soul. From the moment his true lineage was revealed to him, however, his life changed. At the age of twenty, he was suddenly thrust into history as heir to an infamous warrior. Greatly affected by this and what it would mean to be true to himself, Aragorn began to grow slowly more grim and sad in the way he held himself. He became more quiet and more introspective and carried with him a fear that what became of Isildur was still in his blood. These characteristics would become increasingly more noticeable during the next sixty years of his adventures away from his elf kin and the elven woman, Arwen, that he had grown to love.
Denying them both of their life together because of the great sacrifice or immortality that Arwen would have to make to marry him, Aragorn shed his name rightful name once more to take up the mantle of Strider, a Ranger of the North. Though this was partly to run away from his sorrow and his destiny, it also helped to shape his personality away from simply being a kind soul and scholar to the great warrior he would later be known for.
Despite having remarkable powers due to his lineage and upbringing, Aragorn never lost his ability to care for others. Battle hardened through many campaigns, he is still remarkably gentle with and protective of those that can not fight for themselves. Though often melancholy, loyalty to his friends and his cause have allowed him to work through his own personal troubles and his self-doubt to come to their aid. That said, he often is a victim of his own second guessing and he shoulders far more blame than is his fair share. Though he does this simply because he believes it is his burden to bear, he also wishes to shield others from having to deal with the guilt Aragorn feels for many of his decisions, especially those concerning Frodo.
Aragorn is typically soft voiced and of an even temperament. He has an amazing foresight and a remarkable ability to read people, allowing him to be far more forgiving than most. Though he is a solitary figure, preferring lately the company of the silence of the forests and plains to any other, being placed in charge of and protector of a group of halflings has allowed him to come slightly out of his brooding shell and has strengthened his resolve towards his destiny.
Abilities:
Aragon is a warrior at heart, a master of the sword and shield and pretty good with a bow. His skills in tracking are legendary and he spent a very long time with the woodsmen of the Shire, protecting it from ill. Because he grew up in Rivendell, he is also a skilled healer and possesses elven wisdom. He is a masterful commander and tactician as well.
Sample Entry:
It was only when the fellowship was asleep that Aragorn was able to find peace within himself. He could hear the dwarf muttering over a weapon he longed for and one of the little hobbits mentioned clotted cream and jam for the third time before rolling over and delving deeper into sleep.
The tip of Legolas's pointed ear, revealed in moonlight from between golden braids, caused him to think of where his heart happened to lie, far off in Rivendell down the mighty river. He clutched the small pendant in the palm of one grimy hand and pressed it to his chest where it belonged--
No. No, it did not belong to him. Arwen--
I am with you.
Aragorn moved away from camp so that his voice would not carry and disturb the others. Their sleep was already too light to be considered restful. "I know not that this is the proper path," he confessed, turning his eyes upwards as if the voice in his head might manifest herself. Aragorn was not a man of whimsy but having a dialogue sometimes helped. And who better to speak with than her?
You must trust yourself as others trust you.
He bowed his head, small smile lighting on his face. "And if their trust is misguided?"
You know it is not.
"I want only to protect them, but every day that passes, the hobbit's eyes grow--"
His thoughts were disturbed by a heavy crunching sound to the northwest and though he was not the only member of their band to have heard it, Aragorn pressed a finger to his lips and went off to investigate. Feet agile and sure knew the forest better than the rest of him did and he quickly made his way to where one of their traps were set.
A small smile touched his face from behind a straggly piece of dark mane. Sometimes it was important to hold onto the small things in life and find joy where one could. So, Aragorn decided that this moment was a joyful one indeed. It looked like they'd have meat for breakfast after all!
Any doubt he might have felt minutes before was dashed from his eyes as he held the rabbit high, Legolas and Gimli both relaxing their guard. He'd thanked it already for the nourishment it would provide them, the halflings especially. "Your knife?" he asked the dwarf, kneeling to begin the butchering process, while Legolas took his turn at the watch.
"That's not a very big catch, Aragorn," Gimli huffed, already settling back into his bedroll.
And that just made Aragorn smile all the more, glancing a moment at four curly heads pushed together for warmth. "Sometimes small things are enough."
